Ratatouille

How long can Pixar keep making absolutely outstanding movies? I am well into a state of boggle at this point and will soon have to move to one of despair that they are using up all of the creative juices in the greater Bay Area.

Super Paper Mario

I just love wandering around a vast 2D world and jumping on the heads of my enemies. Swirling around funny green pipes is also a source of much satisfaction.

The Great Rosenfeld

I pitched in on a madcap effort to create a film in 48 Hours over this weekend which was absurdly fun, not least because our genre was Superhero, which necessitated running around dressed in ridiculous costumes.

Thanks to the miracle of YouTube, you can see the fruits of our labor:

And Hillary took a bunch of awesome pictures along the way.

Stumbling on Happiness

I was especially fascinated by the idea that we are not very good at imagining alternate emotional states, and are thus saddled with a bias wherein all imagined events tend to evoke feelings not wildly different from what we’re feeling right now. No wonder I always forget to wear a jacket on a cold day!

The Road (3)

A bleak, poetic postapocalyptic journey by father and son. Raises interesting questions of how to raise a child in a world almost entirely devoid of hope. McCarthy’s language remains astounding. Noticed that he is making the case that we should no longer use apostrophes to contract not. Cant say that I disagree. I think “Blood Meridian” remains my favorite.

Founders at Work (3)

A readable collection of interviews with (mostly Internet) startup founders. The interviews don’t seem much edited which makes reading a little sluggish, but reveals more of the personality of the founders. I’m surprised there was no swearing until thirty or so interviews in. Probably only recommendable to other founders for the narcissistic joy of it.

Lolita (3)

Nabokov’s language is so lush and lyrical, it reads like a ode to his own Lolita. The suspense of the unfolding story was unfortunately diminished by my having seen the film, but the poetry of every sentence provided substantial novelty. I aspire to speak as eloquently in a second language as Mr. Nabokov.
