Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (3)

I originally heard about this movie when two or three people separately reported that they were reminded of me by Jim Carrey’s character. I can only assume they were referring to the segments of warped memory land when he was pre-pubescent and hiding under the kitchen table. Vanity aside, it was strangely romantic, strangely similar to the other Charlie Kaufman film I’ve seen and just plain strange.

God of War (3)

For once I picked up a game just because everyone seemed to be raving about it and I actually liked it. God of War is a joy to behold, a pleasure to control, and not too painfully bad in the story department. Though I’d like one good clean shot at the game designer for putting in that goddamned knife-studded rotating column sequence.

The Party (3)

One of Sellers’ better movies and chock full of hilarious antics. Hrundi V. Bakshi can come to my parties anytime.

Everything is Illuminated (3)

Foer is a funny guy, and he’s got a good eye for the beauty in everyday human experience. On top of that, his characters are endearing to the point of being downright likable. I want to read him again and again.

Dr. Death (2)

An at times interesting documentary about a guy who makes electric chairs and ended up getting sucked into a bunch of pointless hoo-ha about whether or not the Nazis actually used gas chambers in the Holocaust. Missable.

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (2)

This is apparently Poe’s only novel and I can’t say that’s a shame. It’s interesting in a sort of mid-nineteeth-century adventure story sense, but the ending is a giant failure of the imagination.

Melinda and Melinda (3)

Being a fan of Woody Allen, I enjoyed the comic parts of this film. The tragic parts weren’t especially tragic and were even at times comic. Given that the conceit for the film was the notion that life is simultaneously comic and tragic, I think comedy can officially be declared the big winner, at least as far as Woody Allen is concerned.
