i heart huckabees (3)

A frantic film that in its very incoherence captured the confusion and directionlessness that infect us in youth but rarely mature into such kooky antics. If one avoids feeling the need to look for a message amidst the mayhem, an entertaining experience is there to be had. As well, the vaguely philosophical nature of the film may even provide inspiration to think about your own philosophies of life, which are hopefully not as much a jibbering mess as those in the film.

Sanjuro (3)

More fodder for my understanding of the stories and archetypes that lie at the root of Japense culture, and another excellent film by Kurosawa.

Visual Intelligence (3)

A captivating introduction to what is known about our ability to process visual information and construct a vibrant, fluid three-dimensional world. I would have claimed myself to be solidly versed in the notion that perception is not reality before reading this book, but my horizons are yet broader and the miracle that is visual perception is yet more fascinating.

Sly 2 (3)

A solidly entertaining sequel to a stylish and promising original. The numerous little somethings that a game like Jak and Daxter somehow lacks, Sly provides in spades: graceful controls, a sense of humor, good voice acting, exquisite visual style, an entertaining plot. I may not leap of out my seat with applause were this a stage performance, but I wouldn’t be at all reluctant to stand while bringing my hands together in that time-honored indication of respect.
