Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words – Jay Rubin (3)

A fascinating discussion of many things Murakami by one of his three main translators. Given my current status as a student of Japanese, it’s fascinating to see “behind the scenes” on much of Rubin’s translation. Mainly it serves to underscore how much I have yet to learn about the language.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour – GameCube (3)

Mmm.. Mario Golf. I liked this every bit as much as Mario Golf for the N64, in spite of all the whining done by every game reviewer under the sun. The special courses are great (peskily difficult in some cases) and the changes to the controls became totally natural after some practice. I only wish it had network support (and the built-in support for betting) so that we could have reinstated our Korman-ATM golf tournaments.

Altered Carbon – Richard K. Morgan (3)

Pulpy sci-fi goodness. Not crazy technical like I like ‘em, but it is based in San Francisco in the far future and it’s amusing to see what he’s done with the place.

Weird Like Us: My Bohemian America – Jane Powers (3)

A thoughtful commentary on the subtle but substantial impact we of the generation frequently known as X are having on the ever evolving beast that is American culture.

The Elephant Vanishes – Haruki Murakami (3)

Delicious bite-sized chunks of Murakami goodness. It’s interesting to see some of the sketches that were later expanded into full novels.

Wabi Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers – Leonard Koren (3)

A fascinating little book about the Japanese notion of Wabi Sabi, which seems to be somewhere between an esthetic, a way of life and a style of interior decorating. And it’s related to tea.
