May 25, 2003∞ Flatterland – Ian Stewart (3)A worthy successor to Edwin Abbot’s tale of Albert line in Flatland, Stewart covers a great deal more ground (and space) in telling the story of Albert’s great great granddaughter, Victoria Line. His mathematical meanderings are clothed in just enough narrative to preserve continuity and the wordplay, if not always brilliant, is darned good for a mathematician. For his finale, he veers off into the realm of the physical, giving a very readable overview of relativity, quantum mechanics, supersymmetry and string theory. It’s a pleasurable romp through the fields of mathematics and far and away easier to read than any other treatment of the same subject matter.
May 16, 2003∞ Ico – PS2 (3)I never really got into Ico, even though I ended up slogging most of the way through the game. I appreciated the stark elegance of the environment, but I think the smoky evil beings kind of freaked me out.
May 14, 2003∞ Life of Pi – Yann Martel (3)An anything but ordinary tale of a boy and his tiger as they float across the Pacific. Martel tells an engrossing story that takes a few dozen pages to get started, but once it does you may find yourself up until dawn as I was, unable to stop reading. I also appreciated his exposition on the beauty underlying religious faith even as one that seeks that beauty by other means.
May 11, 2003∞ Advance Wars – GBA (3)This is a damned fun game. A turn based strategy game played out with military units in bite sized scenarios that are structured enough to have their own flavor but open ended enough to give you the opportunity to develop and use your own style, all couched in a storyline that is silly, but in a good comic book sort of way rather than a badly localized RPG sort of way. I highly recommend it to anyone with GBA playtime in their schedule.
May 3, 2003∞ X2 (3)Hot mutant action! It warms my cockles to bear witness to a big budget film gone so right. Somehow they managed not to lose sight of the plot and characters in the orgy of special effects and action. Working with the bolder strokes of a comic book story must have helped, but numerous others have managed to fail miserably with the same raw material, Daredevil being a prime recent example.
