O Brother, Where Art Thou? (3)

A fine adventure with great musical accompaniment. Having seen Down from the mountain and the original performers of the music in this film before seeing the film, it was a bit strange seeing the music come out of different mouths. See them in the proper order if you’re faced with the choice. Glad to see Turturro in a good role after having suffered through The Luzhin Defence.

Adaptation. (3)

A peculiar and self-indulgent film, but sufficiently eloquent and thoughtful to carry its own weight. I wish Charlie could have come up with an end to the movie because Donald’s was a bit on the ridiculous side, even if it was far from dull.

EverQuest: Online Adventures – PS2 (N/A)

Though I only played the beta, the game was clearly missable. Uninspiring graphics. A lack of any sort of map to guide you through the pointlessly massive world. Uninteresting treadmill-based game play.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (4)

Another solid installment in the series. I can’t wait for the four hour uncut extravaganza.

Roadside Picnic – Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (3)

I liked the concept and the brothers Strugatsky had the wherewithal to create a protagonist with depth and character. It’s steeped in a less than cheerful perspective on humanity, but we would expect no less given their cultural background.

Jibeuro (3)

Hambahgah, peetsah, kentucky chicken! Heart-warming in the extreme.

Chinatown (4)

Polanski is an extraordinary filmmaker and Jack Nicholson an outstanding actor, both working in the full of their prime. Chinatown stands as a testament to how good movies can be.

The Luzhin Defence (2)

A blemish on Turturro’s admirable filmography. While the film was not without redeeming qualities, I found myself entirely unable to empathize with Luzhin as he veered erratically through the film.

Sly Cooper and the Thievious Raccoonus – PS2 (4)

What a gorgeous game! By the time you’re done gaping at the exquisitely realized cartoon rendition of a Parisian roofscape, you discover that you’re already playing the game, having a great time and that the opening credits aren’t even finished. On top of that, the writing and voice acting are worthy of the cinematic feel the created by the design. The game play struggles to hold its own in such exalted company, but it is by no means lacking. It delivers intuitive, evolving controls and nicely woven, reasonably diverse levels. One might complain that the game is a bit short, but I think that Sucker Punch made the right decision in choosing quality over quantity. I would much prefer the game they delivered over a longer, less brilliantly realized version. The only suggestion I might offer is that the option to play through the game at a higher difficulty would have been nice. It felt almost a crime to whiz through some of those beautifully designed levels.

Treasure Planet (3)

Thanks to the magic of low expectations, I enjoyed this film quite a lot. The art style was fantastic and it showcased the skill of Disney’s animators. The plot didn’t stray too far from that of the source material and, mercifully enough, the eXtreme sports elements were kept to a minimum. I especially appreciated the extent to which they further developed the father-son relationship between Silver and Jim.
