Shockwave Rider – John Brunner (3)

Engaging science fiction and an exceptionally prescient exploration of life in the “connected” world. Many of the strange social consequences of a world-wide computer network presented in this book, published in 1975, are just now beginning to rear their ugly heads in the real world.

The Vertical Ray of the Sun (3)

A stunningly photographed, sexy, indulgence of a film. Modern Vietnam — Hanoi in particular — sets the backdrop for a glimpse at the lives of three sisters and a brother. Lives that are at once familiar, exotic and like most, on the verge of falling apart. We can surely thank the French at least in part for yet another irresistible film about nothing in particular.

Romeo + Juliet (3)

A brilliant interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic, even in spite of Lenny DiCaprio being cast in the role of the main man. Vive le bard!

Zoolander (2)

A silly movie with a few cheap laughs and another misstep by Owen Wilson. I’d like to blame this one on Mr. Korman, but I know by now not to watch a film solely on his recommendation. I suppose that I can at least take consolation in having had the good sense not to see it on the big screen.

Tortilla Soup (2)

A Mexican retelling of Ang Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman. While this film has its merits and Hector Elizondo does a fine job, you’re better off seeing the original. Even if that means seeing the original for the second time, it will still be more satisfying.

Va Savoir (3)

This is the sort of movie that is inevitably described as charming and I can’t really disagree with that assessment. It’s not exactly a great movie and it doesn’t seem to have anything particular to say. Yet, I couldn’t help but enjoy it. Must be those kooky French.

The Ethical Slut – Dossie Easton, Catherine A. Liszt (3)

An excellent investigation of the trials and tribulations involved in a variety of non-traditional relationship structures. Easton and Liszt present many of the common difficulties encountered in such circumstances and suggest practical approaches to compromise. A fine read for anyone interested in stepping outside the bounds of traditional monogamous relationships, or for those who find themselves outside those bounds already and in need of some helpful advice.

Office Space (4)

Truly a modern classic. The plight of mankind in the late twentieth century is laid bare and hope delivered in the form of antics, crisis and redemption. All from the creator of Beavis and Butthead no less. Excuse me, I believe you have my stapler.

Muppet Treasure Island (3)

A fine piratical film which I’d seen before but held a repeat viewing so as to share the fun with my pirate mateys. Some of the songs are a bit much and some of the humor more than a bit strained, but on the whole it’s a fine muppet film; Tim Curry is brilliant and who can resist the cameo by the Swedish Chef. Bork bork bork!

Engines of Creation – C. Eric Drexler (3)

A fascinating perspective on the implications of nanotechnology. Had I read this book when it was first published, when I was thirteen, my life may have taken a very different course.

MIB II (2)

I actually knew better than to see this film, but I really wanted to see at least one movie while I was in Tokyo and this was the best of the miniscule selection of English language films playing thereabouts. As you might expect, the jokes were a bit tired and the special effects nicely polished; the romance element was overplayed and the film had Hollywood written all over it.
